Dynabook Tecra X50-F, review: magnesium chassis and bright display for Sharp's big comeback

The Dynabook Tecra X50-T is the long-awaited return of Toshiba's powerful professional notebook division under the Sharp umbrella. The strong and light magnesium chassis together with an IZGO screen are the hallmarks of a laptop created to take it everywhere and be productive. And we have already tried it.

Magnesium shell for record weight

The Dynabook Tecra X50-F is a laptop that at design level does not go one iota from the classicism of the professional field. We are facing a team where portability prevails over everything else. To achieve this in a team of more than 15 inches, the choice of magnesium is key. The result is a large laptop but very light weight: 1.42 kg.

The highlight of the design of the Dynabook Tecra X50 is found in its weight and resistance: only 1.4 kg for a 15-inch laptop, thanks to the magnesium chassis

The appearance of this professional laptop is sober but very robust. There are no frills or surface extras like high-end consumer ultrabooks. Only the metallic design of the hinges stands out in the flat design. They are very resistant and allow a limited inclination but sufficient for most work situations with this laptop.

The case, built in magnesium to achieve lightness and a lot of resistance, has only one catch: it is quite prone to traces being marked on it, also due to the bluish tone of the finish.

Despite its reduced weight, the size of the equipment itself is the usual in a 15.6-inch model, caused in large part by the screen frames.

Of the design of this laptop we must also mention the fingerprint reader, which is located inside the trackpad surface. It responds quickly and accurately when we want to identify ourselves in Windows without entering a password or PIN. We can also choose to do it via facial recognition, for which we have a webcam that includes a manually operated and simple cover to protect our privacy.

Small details like the camera cap are highly appreciated

Connectivity level correct

Without too much fanfare, the connectivity of this Dynabook Tecra X50-F delivers. On the right side we have a microSD card slot, two USB-C ports (Thunderbolt 3) which we can use interchangeably for charging the laptop, and a full HDMI port.

Already on the left side are the headphone port as well as two USB-A ports. The Kensington security connector is not missing. Smartcard connector is also included.

Bright display

In addition to the low weight and portability, the appeal of the Dynabook Tecra X50-F is found on its screen, mainly due to its 15.6-inch diagonal, something that makes it comfortable to work with this equipment for long periods of time.

Sharp puts his experience on the panel and it shows right away. The screen is very bright, above 400 nits, something unusual. It also includes an anti-reflective system, which adds to the team's working experience in difficult environments such as outdoors.

For basic office work, both resolution (1080p) and color reproduction and viewing angles are more than correct.

What we do not understand too much about the screen of the Dynabook Tecra X50-F is that it is a touch panel. It is an extra that is strange in a team of these characteristics.

A quirky keyboard with included trackpoint

Despite being in front of a laptop over 15 inches, the Dynabook Tecra X50-F can not boast a generously sized keyboard or touchpad. And it is something that surprises.

The main part of the keyboard does offer an adequate size and experience, although it has slightly smaller keys than expected and a layout that requires a period of adaptation, especially due to a small space bar. The route is correct and it is comfortable to type.

The drawbacks that we find to the keyboard experience are due to the situation and configuration of the second options and function keys. There are no direct control options for volume or brightness, for which you have to go through the function key. Also, the distribution of almost all the options is quite random and different from what is usual on a keyboard.

But what has been the most uncomfortable for me has been the silkscreen of those secondary options, in very dark gray that remain with very low visibility and require extra attention.

The just-sized keyboard has given us a bittersweet experience

Another detail that does not facilitate the handling of non-direct options with the keyboard is the fact that the keyboard backlight, although it can be activated and deactivated as second options on the keyboard, requires going through the Dynabook configuration application to regulate it in three levels of intensity.

As a curiosity, this Dynabook Tecra X50-F adds a trackpoint that reminds us of the red of Thinkpad computers. In our tests it has left a somewhat hard touch.

As for the touchpad, although it does not have dimensions according to what we expected in a laptop with so much space, it was a pleasant surprise. The surface is smooth and allows very smooth gliding and movements, perfectly complemented by two upper physical buttons that are attached to the path that the trackpad supports.

Great performance with just the right battery for a workday

The configuration of the Dynabook Tecra X50-F that we have been able to test corresponds to the most complete that can be achieved in Spain. We have a Core i7-8565U processor accompanied by 16 GB of DDR4 RAM (expandable up to 32 GB) and a 1TB Samsung NVMe SSD.

On that basis and considering that we only have integrated Intel HD 620 graphics, the team's performance perfectly meets navigation, office automation and entertainment tasks, for which the extra Harman / Kardon sound that complements the panel is interesting. 15-inch in the multimedia arena.

We are not going to use this equipment frequently to view content in good condition, but the sound we get is well above average in this segment, standing out for the high volume without a trace of distortion, although limited in terms of bass.

In our performance tests, with Cinebench R15, this Dynabook scored 536 cb and 45.8 fps in OpenGL. As for PCMark 8, in the Creative test the score was 4579 points while in Home it touched 5000.

From the technical section of the Dynabook we must highlight the SSD drive. It is from Samsung, NVMe type and 1 TB of capacity, and that in our tests has left very interesting read and write figures in sequential mode: 3216 MB / s and 2396 MB / s in read and write respectively. In random mode, those data were 40 and 104 MB / s in reading and writing.

In operation, the Dynabook Tecra X50-F is quiet, but the fans kick in soon when we start to lightly demand of the team. And when they do, the noise generated is appreciable, something that you must take into account for its use in environments where silence must prevail.

The counterpart of this mode of operation and the new fans that the Dynabook premieres, is that the equipment hardly undergoes heating that can disturb it. It is concentrated in the lower part of the chassis but does not prevent, if we need it, using the equipment on the knees for a time.

A key aspect in a professional team is the battery. The one of this Dynabook Tecra X50-F is three cells and 47.84 Wh, which has maintained in our real work tests some correct autonomy figures but without much margin for those who want to go a little beyond 6-7 hours of work effective with this equipment.

Dynabook Custom Software

The Dynabook Tecra X50-F comes standard with the Pro version of Windows 10. It does so with hardly any bloatware, we only have installations from Amazon, Booking or Iolo. But we do have to talk about the Dynabook application to manage certain aspects of the computer's configuration, to which Sharp contributes its own BIOS.

The Dynaboook Setting application allows you to manage some options both at the software and hardware level. We can, for example, indicate if we want the USB ports to allow charging of external devices when the laptop is in hibernation or off. Also how the screen behaves when starting the computer or from idle, the access password or performance settings such as the activation or not of Turbo Boost technology are managed from this program.

Dynabook Tecra X50-F, the opinion and note of Xataka

Finding the perfect balance in a laptop that goes beyond the consumer realm is tricky. Dynabook tries it with the Tecra X50-F, a classic at the design level where we have found the best in what comes first when evaluating a professional model: portability and screen, two aspects where Sharp, the new head of this old Toshiba's laptop division demonstrates experience.

It is clear that with this Dynabook Tecla X50-F we are right in performance and screen, but it has room for improvement compared to the competition in battery and keyboard details that you have to get used to.
