Windows Phone 7 Series, we tested it
Punch on the table by Microsoft with its Windows Phone 7 Series. Although at the moment we will not see any of the phones that will come equipped with this operating system and we are missing many details about the final operation, we have already been able to test the first prototypes.
And the truth is that, despite being a prototype and that the system is not yet fully developed, the operation is quite optimal. For starters, if we have tried the Zune HD or seen our Windows Phone 7 Series video test, it will not be strange.
Although we have been able to test Windows Phone 7 Series on a real prototype, they have not allowed us to take photographs of it, so the ones we show you are from demo screens that Microsoft has installed in the hotel where they are installed, although the conclusions are based on actual evidence.
The design of the operating system has been based a lot on that of the Microsoft multimedia player and with this they have achieved a modern interface, very navigable and fast, although at the cost of breaking with everything we knew so far.
Let's forget about the start screen that Windows Mobile had until now. We now turn to a panel-based interface in which we can have direct access to our favorite functions, receive information automatically, ... All this with a system of animations and movements that make it very attractive.
This home screen will be fully customizable, being able to move the panels wherever we want, as well as create our favorite panels, from access to our most used contacts to access to web pages.
Moving around this screen is easy and fast and to move the panels we just have to hold down one of them and move it to the position we want.
The browser is clearly influenced by that of the Zune HD. Not only do we have a browser without chromeThat is, without an interface that covers screen elements, but it is very functional and supports multitouch to zoom. It is based on the desktop version of Internet Explorer, so its compatibility is very high.
In addition to that, a lot of work has been done on typography, not only to make it pleasing to the eye and appropriate to the overall design of the system, but also to make web pages highly readable, something important on small screens.
When we talked about an interface based on that of the Zune HD we were not deceiving you, in fact if we entered the hub music and video we will find an interface that is the same that uses the Zune HD. In addition, the Zune desktop software will be used by the terminals with Windows Phone 7 Series to synchronize with the computer.
A synchronization, by the way, that can be done through Wi-Fi, avoiding having to connect cables to our terminal to connect it to the computer.
Although the consumer focus of Windows Phone 7 Series is more than clear, they have not forgotten the business world either, since it includes compatibility and connection with Exchange, in addition to hub Office, with the classic applications of this office suite.
In it we can find access to OneNote, an application for taking notes either through the keyboard, typing on the screen, taking photographs, ... Along with it, SharePoint offers us the possibility of sharing and synchronizing files in Cloud, either directly on the Internet or on the SharePoint server of our company.
He hub People shows us a list of recent contacts, that is, those with whom we have had a communication recently, regardless of what system we have done it through. Next to it we have a column with all our contacts to be able to access any of them, as well as another column with updates on their status on different social networks.
We go to hub Pictures, in which we will have all our images and photos that we have taken with the phone's camera. These photos are in a gallery grouped into different albums, for easy classification. From this hub We also have access to the newest of our contacts, for example when they upload new photos to Facebook.
It also includes integration with social networks, such as Facebook and Windows Live, for uploading images, allowing photos and associated comments to be published in a very simple way.
We return to hub Music + Video, in which we will not only find the music and videos that we have stored in the terminal, but third-party services may be integrated into it. As an example they give us Pandora, an online music streaming service.
Accompanying the exit of the system will also come the internationalization of the Zune Experience, that is, we will have access to the music and video store from other parts of the world besides the United States.
One of the hubs The most popular that we will find in Windows Phone 7 Series will be Games, that is, games, Xbox Live on mobile. Our avatar can be seen on the mobile and we will have access to Spotlight, with information on news and games, to petitions, which will show the requests made by our contacts to play, in addition to our collection of games.
We see, therefore, a significant qualitative and design leap, a big and risky bet on the part of Microsoft and, apart from that, a good lack of information and more concrete and technical details (for example, in the compatibility with existing applications ).
Of course, they have not hesitated to gloat in the multitasking support against competitors like the iPhone (not explicitly mentioning it, but nothing veiled).
The problem that Windows Phone 7 Series may have will be its delay in reaching the market. Until the end of this year we will not find the first terminals equipped with it, a time when the rest of the competitors will have had plenty of time to evolve and improve. Will Microsoft be late again or have they done well to wait for a fully polished product? Only time will tell.
