Xiaomi Mi Handheld Vacuum, review: Low-cost aspiration is also time-trial
Although robot vacuum cleaners are popular for their autonomous cleaning, broom vacuum cleaners are also an alternative to classic sled models for their versatility, lightness and power. The prolific Xiaomi has entered the market for cordless vacuum cleaners with the Xiaomi Mi Handheld Vacuum, a model that comes after the Roidmi F8 Storm - also from the Xiaomi ecosystem - but cheaper. One more twist on your successful price-quality model?

The Xiaomi Mi Handheld Vacuum integrates a brushless 9 cyclone motor with 350 W of power that reaches 100,000 rpm, data that would correspond to the Maximum operating mode, at which time its suction capacity quadruples. In this MAX mode, the suction of 100 watts of air and a static pressure of 23,000 Pa are achieved, according to the manufacturer.
According to Xiaomi, the battery of the Mi Handheld Vacuum offers an autonomy of up to 30 minutes, which would be enough to cover an area of up to 160 square meters. This data corresponds to its most favorable use energetically speaking, that is, the standard mode of use.
As for its filtration system, in the head we find a set of tank and filter that, according to what is detailed by Xiaomi, is formed by a system of five filters capable of capturing 99.97% of the particulate matter of up to 2.5 micrometers in diameter. We will not be able to verify this quantitatively in the analysis, although we will assess its cleanliness qualitatively.
A design with a déjà vu air
This Xiaomi Mi Handheld Vacuum comes in a carefully packed cardboard box that optimizes its dimensions to the maximum to integrate its accessories: the vacuum head, a metal extension tube, multifunction brush with integrated motor for wooden and tile floors, small electric brush for upholstery cleaning, flat nozzle for hard-to-reach areas, a small round soft brush for objects, the charger and a stand to leave it upright.
At first glance it attracts attention for its good finishes and the use of quality materials - plastic and aluminum -, something that we verify with intensive use during these weeks. Fitting accessories is fast, robust and simple, hearing a clack when it occurs. If we want to release them, just press the button located on the joint. It does not have much mystery.
Its handling is simple: it consists of a trigger under the handle and the "MAX" button on the handle. Thus, if we want to put it into action, it will be enough to hold the trigger, turning on a white light in the back that will turn orange when the battery is running low.
If we want a plus of suction power, we will actuate the button, which will illuminate a white led light when it is active. The trigger is a very interesting resource to optimize battery, scratching seconds to the Xiaomi Mi Handheld Vacuum battery.
As we mentioned before, this broom type vacuum cleaner reminds us a lot of the Roidmi F8 Storm. Both belong to the Xiaomi ecosystem, only this model that we are dealing with is the one that Xiaomi launches under its own brand. Materials and colors are very similar, so it might be easy to confuse one model with the other. However, the differences in ergonomics are notable.
The head of the Xiaomi Mi Handheld Vacuum - where the handle, filter and motor are located - has an appearance that is quite reminiscent of a watering can: with a cylindrical body and a bulky handle to hold it. Although it does not weigh too much, its design is not the most comfortable in the world during cleaning tasks, especially when the extension tube is connected: the weight distribution is not the best and it shows in the hand. It also doesn't help to have to hold down the trigger.
How is cleaning
During these weeks I have integrated the Xiaomi Mi Handheld Vacuum replacing my robot vacuum cleaner in my cleaning habits. In this time I have not only cleaned the floor, but also the sofas, beds, the occasional carpet and my car to assess the depth of the cleaning and how autonomous it is in the two power modes it offers.
My apartment is quite standard: a house of 65-70 square meters with parquet and tile floors that I share with my dog Lola. I have a habit of vacuuming daily because living with a dog, it is very easy to have everything full of hair and dirt and grass, coming from our walks.
The first thing that strikes me when turning it on is how quiet it is in its standard mode. In fact, you can run the vacuum cleaner in one part of the house and have someone else sleep in the room and not know it. Of course, with this mode all hair and dirt do not always go away, having to occasionally resort to turbo mode. Combining turbo and standard clean the house without problem in no time.
Vacuuming the entire house with the Xiaomi Mi Handheld is very fast, managing to cover the entire surface in approximately ten minutes. The advantage of this type of vacuum cleaner is that we can affect where there is dirt and enter corners easily. Of course, it must be passed by hand. A design detail that is missing is that there was a light on the brush in dark areas, since when you enter the corners or under the bed you do not see how dirty it is.
But since we are testing this vacuum cleaner, on a particularly dirty day we opted to run it in turbo mode continuously. In a matter of seconds it heats up, but as it continues to work, we continue with the cleaning. While I am vacuuming a room, I discover that the white light that comes on when it is in operation has turned orange: before the end of the tour, the battery of the Xiaomi Mi Handheld Vacuum has run out. Nine minutes.
Under the dining room table we have a carpet of approximately 2.5 x 2.5 meters. It is not usually very dirty, first because we clean it weekly and second because we usually eat in the kitchen, reserving this area for special occasions.
Cleaning the carpet with the Xiaomi Mi Handheld Vacuum after removing the chairs is a quick and agile process. It was not necessary to use the turbo mode, because it does not have too much hair or it is very dirty, but visually it has been cleaned of dust and hair in just a couple of minutes. We do not see any difference compared to when we clean it with the sled vacuum, at least qualitatively.
What I have noticed is that operating this vacuum cleaner with both hands is significantly more comfortable and lighter than using a traditional vacuum cleaner, being able to move better between the legs of chairs and table. Of course, it is the first broom type vacuum cleaner that I have to use with two hands.
The next test is to clean the sofa. It's not something you do every day, but every once in a while it's worth removing the cushions and vacuuming up dust, hair, crumbs, popcorn, and even pennies.
I remove the aluminum tube that I usually use for the soil and I am exchanging the electric mite brush, the flat nozzle for the joints of the armchairs and the small round soft brush to rub when necessary. I have to say that when we use short accessories, in the form of a hand-held vacuum cleaner, it becomes much more comfortable and manageable.
To clean the sofa, the standard mode is not enough for me, so I alternate the normal mode with the turbo and in less than fifteen minutes I have finished without problem. Removing cushions and moving the sofa causes the vacuum cleaner trigger to stop pressing, so the battery is not wasted in those seconds of non-aspiration. The result is very good, having nothing to envy of my regular cleanings with the sled vacuum cleaner that I keep for special occasions.
The tests of the sofa and the carpet were done the same day, the third with the Xiaomi Mi Handheld Vacuum. At the end, the tank is already full (the photo that crowns this section was taken when cleaning was finished).
Cleaning the car
This is the most ambitious test of all, as the car has it all: hard-to-reach corners and places to vacuum and a combination of fabrics that are a real magnet for Lola's hair and dirt.
My car is not very big and I don't use it too much, but when I do, my dog usually travels with me. I have gotten used to cleaning it every two months, approximately the frequency with which I do analyzes of vacuum cleaners of this type, and in that time it stains a lot.
100% loaded and with the same three brushes that I used for the sofa, I prepare to clean it. I start with the dashboard and the front with the small round brush and the normal power. As far as I go to the seats and the floor, the standard mode falls short and I go to the max.
Unfortunately I can't finish the cleaning: vacuuming the dashboard, mats and seats practically all the time, the turbo devours the battery in less than fifteen minutes. And I still have the trunk.
What he has aspirated, he has cleaned moderately well, although I have had to resort to maximum power continuously because the standard mode was not enough. Maybe if I did not have pets, did not go to the bush as often or clean my car more often, the autonomy of the Xiaomi Mi Handheld Vacuum was enough, but it is not my case.
The maintenance of the Xiaomi Mi Handheld Vacuum is explained in the manual, where it is detailed that a dry and soft cloth is enough to clean the vacuum cleaner. Thanks to its robust design and the use of quality materials, its handling is safe and intuitive, facilitating the tasks of dismantling, cleaning and replacing its parts. In addition all the parts are washable, except the motor and the electric brushes.
The tank of this vacuum cleaner is not very big, but since it is transparent, we can perfectly see how full it is. However, there is a "MAX" mark from which, if we do not empty the filter, its correct operation is compromised.
Emptying and cleaning the tank is very easy: with the vacuum cleaner disconnected from the power and turned off, we press and slide on the button of the compartment to release it. When the piece is out, we can release the filter by turning. The extraction is simple, being able to separate all the parts and wash them under the tap. We will put it back when it is completely dry. Xiaomi recommends washing the filter and tank at least once a month.
Another part that we can also release is the top cover of the motor to periodically clean it of dust and dirt residues. Cleaning the brushes is also quick: all you have to do is turn them upside down and release the lock that keeps the inner roller in place, something we can do by turning the latch on the side with the help of a coin. Then it will be a matter of pulling him to free him.
The Xiaomi Mi Handheld Vacuum box does not include spare parts or accessories to clean the vacuum cleaner. Also, an approximate frequency of substitution of elements such as the filter is not offered.
Xiaomi Mi Handheld Vacuum, Xataka's opinion
I end this review of the Xiaomi Mi Handheld Vacuum with a bittersweet feeling. I have been using it for weeks as a broom vacuum cleaner for my house and, although logically I have to do more work than with a robot vacuum cleaner, I clean my house well in a short time.
The combination of power and autonomy is sufficient for this task. In fact, if you run the vacuum cleaner on a daily basis, the standard mode is sufficient in many situations.
Periodically cleaning mattresses, sofas or rugs is also possible, thanks to the versatility of its accessories and the power provided by Maximum mode for specific moments. However, this vacuum cleaner falls short when we need a deep cleaning for more than ten minutes.
If we also take into account that the batteries degrade over time, it is foreseeable that in a matter of months we will fall short also in other cleaning scenarios.
Finally, although it has a robust construction and good materials, its design is not the best from the point of view of comfort and details.
In summary, the Xiaomi Mi Handheld Vacuum is a versatile and powerful vacuum cleaner with a very attractive launch price that can be used by households with undemanding cleaning needs.
The problem is its situation in the market: although it costs almost half that of its "counterpart" and benchmark in the Dyson V8 sector (a vacuum cleaner with very high design, accessories and quality), for very little more money we find better alternatives in terms of design and autonomy. No need to go too far: within its own ecosystem, the Roidmi F8 Storm is a clear example of this.
